How AI Actually Connects to Your Business Data

MCP is the plumbing that makes AI useful inside a real business — not just for answering generic questions, but for working with your actual systems.

There’s a gap between the AI demos you’ve seen and what AI can actually do inside your business — and it mostly comes down to one problem: the AI doesn’t know anything about you.

ChatGPT can answer questions about the world. It can’t look up your last 10 customer conversations, check what’s in your inventory, or tell you why a specific project is running late. To do those things, it needs access to your systems. And giving it that access — securely, reliably, in a way you control — is what MCP is for.

What MCP is, in plain terms

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s an open standard, published by Anthropic, that defines a consistent way for AI models to connect to external tools and data sources.

Think of it like a universal adapter. Before MCP, every AI integration was one-off — if you wanted an AI assistant to read from your CRM, someone had to write custom code specific to that CRM, that AI model, and that use case. Change any one of those things and you rebuild from scratch.

MCP replaces that with a single standard. You build a server that makes your data available in the MCP format, and any AI model that supports MCP can use it. One integration, reusable across models and applications.

What it looks like in practice

Say you want an internal AI assistant that helps your team answer client questions. Without MCP, it’s a chatbot with no memory — it can only work with what you type into it.

With an MCP server sitting in front of your CRM, the same assistant can:

  • Pull up a client’s full history before responding
  • Check open tickets or outstanding invoices
  • Draft a reply that references actual account details

The AI isn’t guessing or hallucinating — it’s reading real data from your real system, at the moment it needs it, the same way a staff member would.

Why “standardised” matters more than it sounds

The technical word “standardised” sounds boring, but it has a real business implication: it means your AI integrations aren’t locked to a single vendor or a single implementation.

If you build MCP servers for your key systems — your CRM, your project management tool, your data warehouse — those integrations work with whatever AI model you use. Switch models, add a new tool, build a second application: the plumbing you’ve already built still works.

This is the difference between an AI feature and AI infrastructure.

The part that matters for security

MCP servers are built to be explicit about what they expose. You define exactly which data the AI can access and exactly what actions it can take — nothing more. An AI connected to your customer database through an MCP server can only do what you’ve told the server to allow.

That’s a meaningful distinction from giving an AI broad API access and hoping it behaves. You stay in control of the boundary.

What this means if you’re evaluating AI for your business

If someone is proposing an AI system that touches your internal data — customer records, operational data, anything proprietary — the right question to ask is: how does it connect, and what can it see?

MCP is one answer to that question, and in our view the right way to build it if you want the integration to hold up over time — as your systems change, as better models come out, as your needs grow. It’s not the only piece of the puzzle, but it’s the piece that turns a capable AI model into something that actually knows your business.
